Living Another Way

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” ~Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

It is easy to feel insignificant in today's world. Sometimes, the pressures of living in a world that never sleeps or rests can be overwhelming. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, almost twenty percent of Americans suffer from a form of anxiety overload. To make that number hit home a little better, that is over sixty-eight MILLION people in the U.S. who suffer from being overwhelmed by the amount of pressure they experience in their lives. So, it is no wonder that the added expectations surrounding the Christmas season can and do lend to additional stressors that are often difficult to overcome. The expectations placed on us during this season are immense: family obligations, picking the perfect gifts, navigating crowded stores, overspending, and grief over lost loved ones are only the tip of the iceberg regarding what the world offers us this season.

There is a better way, and it all begins with a breath. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in. God has your back. Breathe out. Take another breath in. You are loved, and you matter. Breathe out. One final big breath in. God sent his Son Jesus to win all the victories that often overwhelm us. Jesus offers us shelter from the worry of the world around us. Ok, breathe out. Remember that we were never meant to solve all the world's problems. Jesus tells us to take things one day at a time, to know that He’s got this and that we are precious to Him. This Christmas, no matter how insane the world gets around you, remember to breathe. It is through Jesus Christ that we receive hope and peace. This Christmas, why not allow yourself these precious gifts from God?

Prayer: God, you are amazing. Thank you for all the heavy lifting you do for us, and thank you for the hope and peace that we can find through Jesus. Thank you for this reminder that when you bring us to it you will take us through it. In Christ’s name, we pray, amen.
