FINDING YOUR “GLORIA”

In the novel Cutting for Stone, a young man named Marion goes to his mentor, Matron, and asks what he should do for a living.

She calls him “an instrument of God” and tells him he should play the “Gloria.”

Marion replies that he can’t imagine playing “Gloria” by Bach. He’s never played a string or wind instrument in his life; he can’t even read music.

“No, not Bach’s ‘Gloria,’” Matron says. “Yours! Your ‘Gloria’ lives within you. The greatest sin is not finding it, ignoring what God made possible in you.”

My friend, I don’t want you to ignore what God made possible in you either.

Paul told Timothy, “Fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you” (2 Timothy 1:6). This is your reminder: Fan into flame the gift of God to you. No one else can fan it besides you.

What have you kept buried, my friend?

What gift is still in its case, unplayed?

Or what did you once pick up but have forgotten to use or develop because life is busy or the pain and the hurt of rejection have shut it down?

The world is waiting to hear your “Gloria,” no matter how out of tune it sounds at first. Because as you practice, it will begin to sound like the soundtrack you were created for. It will silence shame, it will shatter hell, and lies will lose their power.

Play on, friend—we’re all waiting to dance with you.

Reflection: What are your strengths? What are you gifted to do? What are you passionate about? What are your natural abilities? What is your personality? All these things matter, and God uses them as a starting point.
