Jesus was a historical figure.
From first-century historians Josephus to Tacitus, to countless others, His life and impact are without dispute.
- He was reported to have been born of a poor virgin and that His father was a carpenter (Luke 1:27)
- He was a teacher, and His disciples passed on His teachings to others (John 13:13, Matthew 28:19-20)
- He prophesied and performed miracles (Luke 21, John 2)
- He was known for His wisdom and His virtuous life (1 Corinthians 1:24)
- He claimed to be God (John 10:29-33)
- He was crucified by Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius Caesar in Judea (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19)
- An earthquake and darkness accompanied His death (Matthew 27:50-54)
- His followers reported that he had risen from the dead, appeared to them, and showed them the wounds in His hands (Luke 24:37-40)
- His followers worshiped Him as God (Matthew 14:33)
- Belief in Jesus caused disturbances with the Jews, which lead to Claudius’ decree for the Jews to leave Rome (Acts 18:2)
