Faith = Jesus > Me

What is faith, really? What does it mean to be full of faith? Is that something reserved only for someone who has been a Christian for a long time? Or is that reserved for those who are actively serving in the church? Or is it for those who have deep knowledge of the Bible?

Is having faith something complicated and difficult?

On the contrary, Jesus praised the simplicity of children who came to Him and told us to learn from them: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Children simply trust their parents because they believe their parents are stronger and more capable than they are. A newborn baby can’t do anything except trust the adults caring for them. Trusting is the only thing they can do.

Faith is as simple as believing that God is greater, more capable than we are. Faith is relying on God instead of our own strength.

When God called Abraham to leave his comfort zone and go to a foreign land, Abraham went because he believed God was able to provide a home for him and his descendants in the unfamiliar place.

Even when God promised Abraham a son in his old age and when Sarah was barren, Abraham believed it would happen because God had promised earlier that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. For Abraham, the God who created all the stars in the universe could do a miracle to fulfill His promise.

When God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham obeyed because he believed God could even raise Isaac from the dead if it came to that.

Moses was afraid when God first told him to face Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites. But Moses placed his faith in God, knowing that the God who spoke to him from the burning bush was greater than his own ability to save Israel.

Out of the twelve spies Moses sent, ten returned with fear, reporting giants that were stronger than them. And when the Israelites heard their report, they cursed Moses. Yet Joshua and Caleb saw that their God was bigger than the giants living in the Promised Land.

At eighty years old, Caleb boldly said to Joshua, “Give me this mountain,” the place where the giants lived, because he knew that his God was greater than any of those giants.

David approached Goliath, a giant clad in full armor, not because he was confident in his own strength, but because he knew his God was greater than Goliath, greater than himself, and had always been faithful, when he was facing lions or bears. “The battle is the Lord’s!” he declared.

Faith doesn’t require us to understand everything or to have all the solutions at hand to our problems. Faith is as simple as saying, “Alright, Jesus is with me. He’s bigger than I am. He’s bigger than my problems.”

Our part? Just keep walking with Jesus.

And everything’s gonna be alright.
