What to pray for your children

Do’s and don’ts (2)

5. Do not allow feelings of bitterness or unforgiveness towards your child. Ask God for His love in your heart: unconditional love, love regardless of what happened in the past, despite how your child behaves.

6. Discuss your children with God before seeking advice from other people. Parents often discuss the behaviour and problems of their children with other people, ask for help, complain about their children, read books on raising children, and seek professional help, but do not pray for them.

7. Do not accuse your children before God. Your role is to come before God as a priest to plead for grace and mercy. The devil is the accuser. If you accuse your children before God and tell Him of all the wrong things they do, you are doing exactly what the devil does.

8. Do not try to do the work of the Holy Spirit. You cannot convict your child of sin. You cannot change your child’s heart. That is the work of the Holy Spirit.

9. Do not be hasty with your child. Do not expect your child to change overnight. Most things in your child develop over a long process of change (Do you remember it was the same when you were a child?). As parents, our responsibility to God is to produce godly children (Malachi 2:15).

10. Single sentences and short prayers are good enough. Sometimes, a single sentence of prayer several times during the day is enough. Do not complicate your prayers.

11. It is important to pray regularly for your children.
