A Believer’s Pleas

Psalm 43 offers a vivid portrayal of a believer’s heartfelt cry to God amidst distress. This psalm is written by a godly person fervently seeking God’s intervention. The psalmist begins with a plea: “Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people. From the deceitful and unjust man, deliver me, for you are the God in whom I take refuge.”

The psalmist’s first cry is for vindication and defense. He is under attack, facing the oppression of enemies who mock his faith. Despite their taunts, he seeks refuge in God, asking Him to prove the injustice of his mistreatment and to deliver him from his adversaries. This cry is about God’s justice. It highlights our reliance on God’s protection, especially when facing ungodly and deceitful people.

The second aspect of the believer’s cry is for remembrance. The psalmist feels deserted, asking, “Why have you rejected me? Why do I go about mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” This plea reflects a deep sense of abandonment and a longing for God’s reassurance, a tangible manifestation of God’s care. Anyone who has felt distant from God during difficult times desires the same comfort. This reality emphasizes the need for faith even when our emotions suggest otherwise.

The final plea is for nearness. “Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling.” It communicates a deep desire for God’s presence and guidance. The psalmist longs for a return to joyful communion with God. Whether this involves a literal return to the temple or a metaphorical experience of God, the underlying desire is for a closeness that transforms and uplifts the spirit.

The nineteenth-century theologian Charles Spurgeon encapsulates this sentiment well: “One such advocate as the Lord will more than suffice to answer a nation of brawling accusers.” Spurgeon’s words remind us that God’s opinion outweighs all human judgments. .

As you meditate on Psalm 43, remember that God is your Refuge and Advocate. When facing unjust attacks or feeling abandoned, turn to God with a heartfelt cry for vindication, remembrance, and nearness. Trust He will guide you and bring you into His presence. He can impart peace and joy to you right where you are. Let your faith in God’s justice be your anchor, even in the stormiest of times.
