Mindsets That Hurt v Heal

A MINDSET OF GRUMBLING v A MINDSET OF GRATITUDE.

Philippians 4:6 says, "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done."

As I mentioned on day one, the mind has an average of 60,000 thoughts daily, 85% negative and 95% repetitive. The problem is that we tend to see only what we focus on. A mindset of grumbling will result in losing sight of what is good, especially when you only focus on what is bad.

Studies show that grumbling and complaining release the stress hormone cortisol, which negatively impacts your immune system, raises blood pressure, causes weight gain, increases heart disease and fuels anxiety and depression. Over seventy independent studies have been done on the power of gratitude and its health benefits. It has been proven that gratitude lowers depression and blood pressure, relieves stress and improves sleep. Shifting from grumbling to gratitude is a choice.

Psalm 66 teaches us the value of gratitude and being specific in listing all that God has done. My encouragement is to start a gratitude diary and daily conversation with Jesus. Every time I start my car - I give thanks that I have transport. When I open my eyes - I give thanks that I can see. When I hug my kids goodnight - I give thanks for their lives. When you start, you will realise how many blessings you have - and how easy it is to take them for granted.

REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS:

  • Consider how you can turn a grumble into gratitude.
  • List five things that you are grateful for regarding your health.
  • List five things that you are grateful for regarding people in your life.
  • List five things you are grateful for regarding what Jesus has done in your life.

PRAY:

Jesus, thank You for dying on the cross for me. Thank You for loving me so much that You were willing to pay the price for my sins so I can have a new life in You. Please open my eyes to see what You see. Amen.
