Day 22: Pious and/or Prodigal
The word prodigal is usually associated with a single story of two sons in the bible. And the word is usually interpreted as someone who makes poor decisions and runs away to live recklessly. But what it means is generosity on a lavish scale. Imagine someone turning up with 1000 bottles of the best wine late in the night at a wedding. Jesus is that guy. Time and time again, he displays his unrestrained, ludicrous generosity. However, He is often seen as prim and proper. So, which is it? Was Jesus a pious, celibate law scholar or a guy who enjoyed wild partying with prostitutes?
1) Which of these two parts of Jesus am I more comfortable with? Why?
2) What can I learn about Jesus and put into practice from accepting the part of Jesus that comes less naturally to me?
3) Write a short statement to remind yourself of these multi-faceted truths about Jesus!
a) Matthew 11:19
b) Luke 5:27-29
c) Matthew 6:1-18
