Moses’ Journey into Leadership

Moses’ story begins in the book of Exodus, which finds the Israelites enslaved in Egypt after they’d gone there to escape famine during Joseph’s story in the book of Genesis. When Moses was born, the Egyptian pharaoh issued a command ordering the drowning of all male Hebrew infants in the Nile. Jochebed, Moses’ mother, floated her son in a basket in the Nile in an effort to preserve his life and, as a result, Moses was adopted into the Egyptian royal family. He acquired the dignity, vision and fortitude required to free the Jews from slavery as a result of his upbringing in the Egyptian palace. He killed an Egyptian slave-master who oppressed the children of Israel. Fearing that Pharaoh would kill him, he fled to Midian.

On the slopes of Mt Horeb, he watched over the flocks of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, until one day God appeared to Moses in a burning bush, asking him to go back to Egypt to lead God’s people out of slavery. Consequently, he set out on a mission to liberate his people from slavery. Following the Ten Plagues that fell on Egypt, he led the Israelites out of the nation and across the Red Sea. Thereafter, they gathered around Mt Sinai, a mountain located on the southern Sinai Peninsula, where Moses received the Ten Commandments, established the priesthood, and built the Tabernacle.

Moses’ life is an example of leadership, servanthood and humility. His story gives us hope that God can use us even after we’ve failed. But most importantly, Moses’ life is a wonderful example of a journey of faith
