Guilt versus Shame

Today’s verse contains the words of Jesus as he describes the Holy Spirit to his apostles. When it comes to the Holy Spirit, we know that it lives inside of us. It sometimes convicts us, too, so I want to touch on the difference between shame and guilt.

The Holy Spirit convicts us for our actions, words, or thoughts when we are operating contrary to God’s laws, principles and practices. Our guilt is exposed. Once we confess our sins and ask for forgiveness, God forgets them, and we are fully forgiven. Whereas guilt says, “I feel bad,” shame says, “I am bad.” Shame does not come from the Lord, friend. It serves no one but the devil and is a twisted emotion. To live in it is a trap set by the enemy. Whenever we begin to feel shame, we must remember to trust the Lord, who loves us endlessly.

Reflect: Spend time specifically communing with the Holy Spirit today. Think of a time when you felt shame and then proclaim your worth in God.

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the Holy Spirit. I want to know you more, on a deeper level, and in new ways. I am yours, God. Amen.
