Praising God in Suffering

“Why is this happening?” This question often arises in the midst of pain, sorrow, and tragedy. If you have felt this way, you are not alone. Even those who love God can feel as though they have been abandoned. God’s own Son cried, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” (Matthew 27:46). Scripture reveals that God allows suffering to come upon those he loves. In Psalm 22, even David, a “man after [God’s] own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14), asks God, “Why?”

David clearly expresses his suffering and feelings of powerlessness. But by the end of the psalm, his lament turns to praise, even though his circumstances have not changed. David is saying we can intentionally praise God in the midst of suffering.

When you find yourself in a difficult trial, it’s easy to question God’s character. You might wonder: Why would a good God allow me to suffer? Perhaps you’ve even been tempted to label God as neglectful or malicious in the midst of your pain.

The Bible tells us a different story. God’s character is completely perfect; he always acts with our best interests in mind. When you remember that God is completely good and also infinitely wise, you begin to understand how, throughout all of Scripture, he uses suffering to accomplish great things through those he loves.

When faced with trials, we can follow David’s example by implementing these four practical steps to perseverance:

  • Let the Bible inform your thinking, and dwell on its truth.
  • Remember God’s past faithfulness in order to foster future hope.
  • Acknowledge your weakness and inability in your present situation.
  • Cast your cares upon God in prayer, knowing he is the only one able to help.

In taking these steps, your thinking will be transformed. You will find joy when you view your trials as a platform for giving God glory. Remember, suffering is temporary. Whether it lasts a few hours or your entire earthly life, you have been given an opportunity to put God’s greatness on display. When you reach the end of your life and prepare to enjoy eternity with God, your chance to showcase his glory on earth will be over. This is your highest calling and greatest opportunity—to glorify God with everything you are. Join David in proclaiming the goodness and glory of God through your weakness today.

Victory Through Weakness

Suffering can be perplexing. God’s people—and even Jesus himself—have often asked the “Why?” question when facing suffering. Scripture pulls back the curtain to reveal some, though not all, of God’s purposes in permitting suffering to enter our lives. Through it all, we are called to persevere faithfully, resting in the assurance of ultimate victory and eternal reward.
