You Can Do What I Do: Follow Me

A disciple follows another to learn from the one they follow. When Jesus found his first disciples, they were fishing, learning, and practicing their fathers' trade. The fact that they were out fishing meant that these young men didn't qualify for higher schooling, where Jewish men would follow and learn from a religious leader called a Rabbi (teacher), so one day, they too could attain the esteemed title of Rabbi.

Jesus called them, saying, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Mark 1:17). When Jesus said, "Follow me," it was like He said, "You are qualified! You have what it takes to learn to do what I do, and I believe in you!"

This way of inviting someone to follow was the same way rabbis would choose their disciples. A disciple would follow their Rabbi everywhere, learning by watching and helping the Rabbi as he taught and ministered.

In our modern culture, it seems bizarre that a person would leave their trade and family to follow a stranger. In Bible times, however, getting the chance to follow a Rabbi was a valuable opportunity; this is why the disciples "immediately left their nets and followed Him." (Mark 1:18)

Jesus invites you to follow Him, too! This invitation should encourage you because it says, "You are qualified! You have what it takes to learn to do what I do, and I believe in you!"

Question: Do you believe you have what you need to do what Jesus does?

Prayer: Jesus, I am mere a vessel of clay. You have chosen to put treasure in me and already given me everything I need for life and godliness. I believe You today when You say I have everything I need to follow and do what You do. Grow my trust in You! In Jesus' name, Amen!
