The Splashy Ending

This is a confusing part of the story: Jesus said He had Living Water—but then He died. How could this be part of God’s plan? But God was sovereignly in charge of every detail. At just the right time, God put His life-giving power on full display: Jesus stepped out of the tomb, fully and newly alive.

This good news was like gulping icy water on a hot day: Jesus is alive! Soon the implications of Jesus’s work became clear: His perfect life made it so we can have His righteousness; His death made it so our sins can be washed away; His new life made it so we can have life too! The thirsty must simply look to Him.

Jesus returned to heaven, promising to come back one day, but in the meantime, the third person of the Trinity, God the Spirit, came to live with and within His followers. God the Spirit reminds God’s followers of the satisfaction they have in Him when they are tempted to drink from other wells. The Spirit works through God’s people so they can grow in His character and point others to the One with Living Water.

It's true: God pours out His Spirit on His followers, and we get to splash around in the good news each day! The days can feel like wilderness, but we place our hope in things ahead: one day, Jesus will return, and we will drink from the river of the water of life, in the presence of God Himself. There will be no more tears and sadness, no more thirst, no more death.

In hope, we remember what was prophesied centuries ago in Isaiah 41:17-20. And to a parched world, we echo Isaiah’s words:

“Come, everyone who is thirsty, come to the water” (Isaiah 55:1, CSB).
