God Wants to Bless Us
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presented to His disciples and all who were listening the code of behavior for His kingdom, a kingdom open to everyone who acknowledges Jesus as their Lord and Savior. And the wisdom of this sermon is timeless.
We will, for instance, be nourished by God’s goodness when we hunger and thirst for His righteousness. We will know joy and God’s blessing when we seek to be right with our precious Lord.
In addition, we will experience the blessing of being keenly aware of God’s presence with us when we are “pure in heart,” when we live with “integrity, moral courage, and godly character.”
Believers will be blessed and “comforted by inner peace and God’s love” when we face challenges in life, specifically those challenges that come because we are doing what is right and living as God calls us to live.
And we will be blessed to be “spiritually alive with life-joy in God’s goodness” when people insult us and libel us because we are followers of Jesus.
Finally, we can be faithful when we remember that our ultimate reward awaits us in heaven no matter what we go through here on earth. Praise God for this ultimate promise of eternity with Him. Yes, we are blessed.
Reflection
This opening section of the Sermon on the Mount is called the Beatitudes. Which blessing in these beatitudes—or in the extended passage not quoted earlier—is most attractive to you? Why? What step(s) will you take to experience that blessing?
