Daily Bible Reading – October 2022: God’s Renewing Word of Peace and Justice

October 10

Introduction

The book of Nahum is a poem celebrating the fall of Nineveh, the capital city of Israel’s ancient and oppressive enemy, Assyria. The fall of Nineveh, near the end of the seventh century B.C., is seen as the judgment of God upon a cruel and arrogant nation. The LORD’s people can now live in peace and celebrate their festivals. Today’s reading describes God’s power in avenging those who are oppressed and taking care of those who turn to him.

Scripture Reading

Nahum 1:1-15

Today’s Key Verse: Nahum 1:7

The LORD is good; he protects his people in times of trouble; he takes care of those who turn to him.

Reflect

Reread verses 2-10. How is the LORD God described? What does the LORD promise (verses 12-14)? What is the good news (verse 15)? Based on today’s reading, what verses speak of God’s judgment? What verses speak of God’s kindness and mercy?

Pray

All-Powerful God, you are good and merciful to those who turn to you. Your love for me fills my heart with joy. Daily will I praise you. Amen.

And now, join us in a prayer of thanksgiving for the publication of the full Ge’ez Bible in Ethiopia. Holy God, we thank and praise you that, in early May, the full Bible in the Ge’ez language was dedicated in Ethiopia. The dedication ceremony united leaders and members from all Ethiopian Christian churches. Thanks to the generosity of donors, this new translation of the full Bible can now connect the Ge’ez-speaking population with Scripture in their heart language. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading

Nahum 2:1-13: The downfall of Nineveh is described.
