High Positions Require High Standards

The events surrounding the sad story of David and Bathsheba occurred about halfway through David’s reign. That would mean David was about fifty years old. One of the most amazing things about the Bible is that the lives of people, even kings, are described honestly and openly. Social standards would have kept us from knowing stories like David’s sin with Bathsheba, but God made certain that this story would be preserved for his people. Jesus was praying for his disciples when he said, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17).

Scripture is careful to teach the life of David with truth, and this story has a purpose for all generations. Everyone sins, even kings like David. This story is one of the great failures in David’s life, but it is also a story of God’s great redemption.

1. What does God’s redemption look like in David’s life? How is this a lesson of encouragement for every generation? (2nd Samuel 12:24–31)
2. Psalm 51 is David’s psalm, written after his sin with Bathsheba. Read the Psalm from beginning to end. What should we desire when we ask for God’s forgiveness?

Influence of God's Glory

By the end of this study, we pray that you will know God’s voice better, that you will know when and how he speaks, and feel compelled to obey. As we study Scripture, we will discover that God’s plan cannot be thwarted regardless of who is in power. The point of the original monarchy found in 1 and 2 Samuel, illustrates that from the beginning.
