God's Goodness in Times of Trouble

Amid his great suffering, Job tried to hold on to this belief that "In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." (Rom. 8:28). Like everyone else, Job had a hard time understanding what good could come from a difficult situation like his. He did not know how long God would allow him to endure his suffering, pain, and shame before seeing any good things resulting from his trial. Job even doubted that any good thing could come from his situation.

Often, we feel that kind of impatience amid adversity. We want to know the reason for our suffering – right now, if possible. This often makes us grumble when we experience difficulties in life. The book of Job provides insight into why we cannot fully understand this 'mystery'. It is very rare for anyone to understand it. Therefore, at times like this, we must increase our capacity of patience, because we might not be able to know the reason for our trouble, or the good things that will come out of it, until the end of our lives.

The key to seeing God's goodness in times of trouble is to focus on God alone. Believe that God is always good and wants to continue to give His best to His children. We must understand that our focus is very important. To illustrate this, try placing your thumb about 15 cm in front of your face. Now focus your gaze on the thumb. What's going on in the background? If done right, the background will appear blurred. Now focus your gaze on the background of the thumb. What will happen to your thumb? Your thumb should look blurry this time.

This is a simple lesson that teaches us that, when we focus on our hardship and suffering, we lose sight of the good things God is doing in our lives. On the other hand, if we choose to concentrate on God's lovingkindness, the truth of God's Word, and God's promises, the suffering will not appear as great - even if it does not completely disappear. Paul reminds us that what we focus on is our choice. We decide what we see. Paul chose to see God's goodness rather than his troubles by saying: “…But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” (Phil. 3:13).

We need to remember that God is still a good and wonderful Father, even in the midst of our suffering. Therefore, it is necessary to always say words that build our soul and spirit. We should replace words of grumbling and complaining with words of praise, gratitude, and admiration for the power of God. Praise and thanksgiving will bring us joy and help us see the goodness of God in our adversity and suffering.
