A Guardian Redeemer
As we know, Ruth is Naomi’s daughter-in-law and Ruth is a stranger in the land. She is not an Israelite, but there is a connection with Boaz who is the guardian- (or kinsman) redeemer (vv12–13). This is a special role in the family. It is the role of deliverer or savior.
The guardian-redeemer is a male relative who, according to various laws of the Pentateuch, had the privilege or responsibility to act on behalf of a relative who was in trouble, danger, or need. The Hebrew term for kinsman-redeemer designates one who delivers or rescues or redeems property or person.
The guardian-redeemer is the key here. That is the person who protects and saves. Boaz does that for Ruth.
Naomi is a wise woman and Ruth follows her advice. Naomi knows that Boaz will take care of Ruth, but more of that in tomorrow’s reading.
You know we too have a guardian-redeemer, and that is Jesus. Just as Boaz rescued Ruth, Jesus has rescued us. He redeems and saves us because He is God, our creator. It isn’t complicated like it is for Ruth. We just need to ask, and the relationship with Jesus will commence.
