Developing Your Team's Character - Part III

Coach Tommy Bowden developed a system to help shape the character of his football players called CARDS. We have discussed C for commitment and A for accountability. Today, we will consider R for responsibility.

Responsibility and accountability go hand in hand. One of the biggest transitions for younger employees is the area of responsibility.

It's a sign of maturity when employees assume responsibility and complete their required tasks. As leaders, we need to remember that some have not yet had many responsibilities in life.

Galatians 6:4-5 teaches, "But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting, but to himself alone, and not to another. For each one will bear his own load."

We sometimes must gradually add more responsibility to our younger employees until they fully bear their loads.

Questions for Reflection:

  • According to Galatians 6:4-5, why is it important for employees and team members to have their specific responsibilities?
  • What do you think happens if we do not give employees and team members enough responsibility?
  • How are responsibility and accountability related?
