HE IS ADONAI

This Bible verse is most famously used for teachings about God and money. We use it to explain to people why our financial needs can’t sit above our devotion to God, and how to highlight how powerful the influence of money can be in our lives.

Beyond making a great reference for a tithe message, though, this verse draws our attention to an important truth: our lives cannot be governed by opposing authorities.

One of the Hebrew names for God in the Bible is ‘Adonai’ or ‘Master’. To be our master means God is our leader, our oversight, and our ultimate governor. He is whom we take our directions from, and He is the backstop to all our decision-making and how we orient our lives. When we view God as master, it means we give Him and His Word the final say.

Coming back to the example of money, if money were to be your master, it might say, ‘You don’t have enough’, or that ‘Generosity is a luxury of the rich’, but when God has dominion He tells us to seek first His kingdom and all our needs will be met (Matthew 6:33). God tells us that those who give out of little have given more than the wealthiest among us (Luke 21).

Whether it’s money’s hold over you that needs to be put in its place, or fear and anxiety about the future that need to be calmed, today ask God to be your master and allow Him to have the final say. The life He promises is abundant (John 10:10).
