THE GROOM WAY OF BEATING PORN TEMPTATION
From March 2016, the print version of Playboy magazine will no longer feature nude women. This was the news I gathered from an Indian Newspaper, Deccan Chronicle (October 13, 2015). Scott Flanders, the company's chief executive, explained the reason behind this decision: "That battle has been fought and won. You're now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it's just passe at this juncture!" That quote shows one how powerful the online porn temptation is: it is just one click away! William M. Struthers, in his book, Wired for Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain, talks about three As which particularly make the online porn temptation deadly and seemingly very tough to overcome: Accessibility, Affordability and Anonymity.
When I went to God’s presence with an open Bible and asked him for a solution to overcome this temptation that is so very nagging, God gave me three words. These words rhyme. I call them ‘ditty’ (poetic) words that help one beat the ‘dirty’ (porn) picture temptation. May I share the first word with you in today’s devotion: It is “GROOM”.
This is the first step for beating the porn temptation: stay in love with Jesus, the bridegroom who bleed and died for us on the Cross! Matthew 25:1-13 presents Jesus as the Bridegroom. We as Jesus’ brides must fall in love with him more and more. We must never leave our “first love” for Jesus (Rev. 2:4). We must take delight in looking full into his wonderful face. And, when we do that, the things of the world – including porn - will grow strangely dim! If we claim to love Jesus our bridegroom, we will naturally obey his commands.
The Bible repeatedly teaches this (John 14:15, 23). The more and more we love Jesus, the more and more effortless avoiding porn surely becomes. If we deliberately sin against Jesus – that certainly includes the time we chose to willfully watch porn – it is as if we are ‘trampling’ on his blood, it is as if we kicking his love (See Hebrews 10:26-29). The imagery of Jesus being our Groom over whom are going gaga, will enable us to say, “nah, nah” to porn!
