Journey Through John

Scripture:

John 13:3 “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God; so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist.”

Observation:

It is amazing to see that Jesus’ willingness to do such a lowly and menial act of service was not in spite of Him being the greatest person in the world – God Himself – but it was actually because of that. True greatness is not threatened by serving others, lifting others up, focusing on others’ needs. It is insecurity that causes people to clamber for the spotlight and focus on ourselves. The more certain we are of our immense worth and greatness in God’s eyes, the more free we will become to do whatever menial acts of service and kindness that He places in our path – not needing to be noticed or receive praise. Just seeking to be a blessing to others out of love and compassion.

Application:

When I catch myself trying to gain recognition, rather than quietly serving people in unnoticed, humble ways, it’s usually because I’m not living in the security of who I am in God’s eyes. When I abide in God’s presence and let His love flow over me and assure me of how much I am worth to Him, it frees me to just serve – not needing acclaim from people.

Prayer:

Lord, help me notice the needs of people around me and focus on them – rather than focusing on myself and my own concerns. Help me to live so consistently in Your great love for me, that I will be completely secure in who I am and will have freedom to serve even in menial ways. Amen.

Truths to notice:

13:1 Jesus showed His love for His friends by humbly washing their feet.

13:2 The devil prompted Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus.

13:3-4 Jesus was so secure in His own identity as God, that He had the inner freedom to do this menial task, without feeling threatened in His own self-worth and position.

13:8 The foot-washing symbolized that each of us needs our lives cleansed by Jesus.

13:14-15 The foot-washing was a model of how Christian leaders should serve people.

13:21 Jesus knew Judas was going to betray Him, but He didn’t stop Him or shame Him publicly for it.

13:34-35 Jesus’ greatest concern as He faced His own death was that we, His followers, would love each other. This love is our most effective way to attract people to Christ.
