You Are Competent!
Feeling incompetent? You are not alone. It is not unusual for first-time parents to feel incompetent in their new role. The good news is that God has equipped us with natural parenting instincts. Did you know that, once you became an “expectant” mother or parent, biological changes started occurring in your brain and elsewhere, to prepare you for your role? You are naturally competent. You can enhance your God-given natural competency by asking God to give you unusual parenting wisdom and insight. so you can know your baby in ways that would enable you to harness your baby’s individual differences and uniqueness. God wants to add super to your natural parenting abilities.
My spouse and I felt incompetent when we welcomed our first child, a little and fragile human. Our little one was dependent on inexperienced parents. How can we protect him from germs, bad people, and strangers who want to touch him? When and how should we bathe him? We had a lot of questions. Sometimes, we received good counsel, and other times, we had to follow our God-given parental instinct. We still feel incompetent sometimes, but we hold on to the fact that we were chosen and naturally equipped by God to parent our little one. This makes us feel competent.
When you feel incompetent, remember God has made you naturally competent and He can make you supernaturally competent to nurture your baby. Just ask. James 1:5(KJV) says, If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Prayer: Father, I thank you for my natural parenting instinct. I ask for wisdom to nurture this child and receive only wise counsel that would benefit my family in Jesus name. Amen
