"God With Us" - Bryan Torwalt
We started writing the song God With Us while the youngest daughter of some of our best friends was in the hospital. Three weeks after Penelope was born, she contracted bacterial meningitis, and was in the hospital for a month. There were a lot of fearful moments, but we set up an iPad with non-stop worship, believing that worship changes atmospheres, and began declaring God’s truth and goodness. We collected stories of healing and miracles, and would declare the testimonies over her during that time.
One night, Katie came home from visiting them in the hospital with a chorus she had written in the room. It became the chorus to God With Us and was a constant anthem for us through the process. Since then, Penelope has fully recovered and has passed every check up since with flying colors. The song God With Us has become an anthem of God’s goodness and faithfulness for us and our church family.
Romans 8 is a really beautiful passage of scripture. Specifically from verse 26 on, the Apostle Paul paints an incredibly powerful picture of the victory of Christ Jesus through death and resurrection, and what that means for us as Christians. He goes on to describe in detail that there is nothing that could come between or separate us from the love of Christ. Not “tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or sword... neither death, nor life, angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8: 35-39 (ESV)
With everything that’s going on in the world today, it’s easy to live a life where we are constantly in fear. But as much as possible, we need to remind ourselves of what God has done and feed ourselves on testimonies of His faithfulness, and begin to see the world through Heaven’s perspective. There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God!
