 Waking Up

Luke 15:17 - “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!”

This is a favorite verse for me. When it comes to recovery, coming to ourselves is the turning point to recovery for so many of us. The road is often hard and harder, but we do eventually hit what we call our bottom. At the end of us, we are out of resources, ideas, willfulness, and manipulation.

When working with addicts for   decades it’s still amazes me the circumstances that are crafted to help the   person “come to their senses”. When we are bent to sin or in addiction we are   truly deceived. The ways we think, feel and behave are extremely irrational.   The friends that we keep are questionable when we are in this state as well.

It is painful and freeing to realize we cannot continue doing what we are doing. It just plain doesn’t work anymore. This is the powerless moment the Twelve Steps talk about. We come to the end of our life with our addiction. When you come to your senses, you start to see your addiction and your life differently, and with a little more clarity.

For some this is a powerful moment and they never look back. For some it comes in spurts and they have to hit that final time of being sick and tired of being sick and tired.

The Journey of the Prodigal

The famous story of the prodigal in Luke gives us an outline of the addiction process as well as the principles for the journey back. This story of addiction is timeless and so are the principles for recovery. God’s desire is always for us to leave our addictions to follow Him. Join me, as I walk scripture by scripture through the journey of the prodigal.
