Science and Spirituality

Recently, Americans celebrated the 50th anniversary of humankind’s first ever steps on the moon. The year 1969 marked one of science’s greatest achievements. Maybe you remember the details—a 6.2 million pound rocket blasted American astronauts into space at over 25,000 mph. Four days later, they landed on the moon.

But before Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took those epic first steps, something else happened. Buzz took out bread and wine and celebrated the Lord’s Supper, confessing his connection to Jesus. He also read the ancient words of his Savior: “I am the vine; you are the branches” (John 15:5). Buzz imitated the astronauts from Apollo 8, the men who read Genesis 1 as they gazed upon Earth from space.

I love those stories. They remind me that the scientific and the spiritual aren’t mutually exclusive. You can be a devoted scientist, even the best in your field, while holding on to God, to his Son, and to Christian faith.

Maybe some of the “fruit” that Christians produce is a deep desire to know God more, not just through quiet times and church services but through the vast universe that our Father created. Maybe “Amen!” and “Hallelujah!” can be heard not just in sanctuaries but also in outer space.

Maybe the most scientific among us can also be the more spiritually focused on Jesus. Just ask Buzz!
