Prayer: Lord, make my heart sensitive to your word today. Thank you for being faithful and keeping your promises. Thank you for being consistent in your character and your desire to save lost people. Give me a new appreciation for your gift of grace and salvation. Reveal to me how I can trust in you more.
Always Through Faith
Once you realize that faith in Jesus is the only way that you can have a relationship with God, this probably raises some questions. One of the most frequently asked is a pretty logical one—what happened to all of those people who lived before Jesus?
In his explanation of salvation by faith alone in Romans 3, Paul is quick to give us an answer: “God in His forbearance passed over the sins previously committed.” He goes on to add clarity to this by using the example of Abraham, who lived over 2000 years before Jesus. Abraham was made right or “justified” before God because of what he believed—not what he did.
The Mosaic Law came after Abraham, but it also clearly did not save anybody. Old Testament or New, salvation has always come through faith in the promises of God. Today, the promises of God have all come together in Jesus. He is the culmination of God’s promises to Abraham, Moses, David, and the nation of Israel. Jesus’ sacrifice provides forgiveness for all who believe—past, present, and future.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
- Have you ever believed that people who lived before Jesus achieved salvation by obeying the Law? If so, when did that change?
- How does knowing that God has always saved people by faith change your view of God?
What’s Next?
- Thank God for His consistency throughout history, and ask him use what you have studied today to help you better trust Him in the future.
