Know Your Mission
Devotional Content:
In the book Second Samuel, David’s offer of kindness to the new king of the Ammonites is not taken well. In fact, he suspects David has underlying motives against him and his people. Instead of embracing David’s well-meaning men, King Hanun instead seizes them and humiliates them by cutting off half of their beards and cutting their robes halfway up their buttocks. When David gets word of these actions, he tells his men to stay in Jericho until their beards grow out because they felt deep shame. David then hears that the Ammonites and Arameans are sending soldiers to do battle against him. David dispatches Joab with his strongest fighters to meet the opposition.
David’s mission, in this instance, is to protect his people. It’s interesting that when the mission for David came, he was prepared. He did not hear that the Ammonites and Arameans were coming to do battle and find a place to hide. He was ready and he had prepared his armies to be ready.
What is your mission? Where is God calling you to be a warrior? Are you ready for the battle? Honestly, the missions are all around us. We live in a culture that fights against God and His purposes every day. Do you have children? Your mission is to instruct them, to lead them, and to protect them. As a husband, your mission is to fight for your marriage in a world that does not value marriage. Your mission as a Christian man is to stand firm for Jesus not wavering in the daily battle. Your mission is to be a man of integrity and honor that stands out from the crowd and is not afraid to stand out. In your workplace, your mission is to not cut corners or to cheat someone or to do whatever it takes to make a buck or two. Your mission is to show Jesus to a world that does not know Him very well, if at all.
Even as I write this, I get fired up. I want to be a warrior. I want to fight for Jesus! Yet there is one part of being a warrior on mission that we have not talked about. It comes from the mouth of the Greatest Warrior ever. Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself.” So Jesus is telling me that in my missions as a warrior, the absolute most important thing that people see in me and from me is love. Wow! I never saw that coming!
Today’s Challenge:
- What are the missions that God has put in front of you now?
- Which missions are easy for you and which are more difficult?
- How can you fight today for your marriage?
