SOAP: Matthew 3:16-17
“After Jesus was baptized, just as he was coming up out of the water, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my one dear Son; in him I take great delight.’”
Into the Text
Have you ever struggled to grasp the concept of the Trinity? You are not alone. The Trinity – one God in three persons – is a divine mystery that we humans cannot understand, yet it is a beautiful and essential truth of our faith.
There are three words to help us understand the Trinity: equality, unity, and distinction. Each person of the Trinity is equal in power, unified in love and mission, and distinct in role.
The Bible provides us with several glimpses into the nature of the Trinity. Matthew 28:19 shows us that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all part of salvation. While God is one, He exists as three distinct persons, each fully God.
In 2 Corinthians 13:13, Paul highlights the different roles each person of the Trinity plays in our lives. Jesus provides us with grace through His sacrifice. The Father accepts Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins and showers us with His love, and the Holy Spirit indwells believers and makes us more into the image of Jesus Christ.
We also see the Trinity at work in Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3:16-17). The Father speaks from heaven, the Son is baptized, and the Holy Spirit descends like a dove. This event beautifully portrays the unity and distinctiveness of the Trinity.
Embracing the Trinity means acknowledging God's oneness and the distinct roles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Deuteronomy 6:4).
Because the Trinity is a mystery, there are no human metaphors that can truly explain our eternal God. However, this does not mean that we cannot know God. We can know Him truly as evidenced in His Word and in our lives. What an incredible God we serve!
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for revealing yourself as one God in three persons. Help me to understand and embrace this truth. May I experience the grace of Jesus, the love of the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit in my daily life. In your name, Amen.
