Perseverance Through the Pain: Kyra’s Story
When I was in high school, it may have appeared I had it all on the outside—I earned good grades, participated in clubs, got scholarships, took college classes, had a lot of friends, and was valedictorian.
But on the inside, I was crumbling. I came from a religious background, but my mom was unstable, angry, and controlling to the point where I was scared of her. My sibling didn’t believe me, and my dad didn’t want to confront the issues. No matter how perfect I tried to be, my mom didn’t stop.
During Covid, I became depressed and suicidal. Because of these issues and what I viewed as judgmental people at church, I turned into an atheist. One day, my mom kicked my dad and me out of the house with a gun. She threatened to kill herself, and the next day, when I headed back home, I was so scared I wouldn’t find her alive.
Despite everything, I knew I had to keep going. A relationship breakup led me back to God. I went to a Christian college where people were open to discussing real issues, life's hard things, and spirituality. I joined a small group at church, and I’ve continued to heal through journaling and therapy. Having passions has also helped—I’m in school to become a nurse, enjoy being a resident assistant in my college dorm building, and participate in fun events.
My mom became a Christian, apologized, and has gotten better. However, when moments that aren't good occur, I know God helps me and is there for me. I don’t feel a need anymore to control things. God has helped me forgive the people who hurt me, and no matter what happens moving forward, I know He has a plan for me. I have peace, and I’m thankful He is walking through my life journey.
Pray Over Your Story
Praise—Thank God for loving you and being exactly what you need. Also, thank Him for the areas in life He has blessed you with.
Repent – Confess any sins to God.
Ask – Ask God to help you in whatever area of life you need perseverance in right now, to help you forgive anyone who has hurt you, and to bring people into your life for community.
Yield – Surrender all of this to God. Take a few moments in silence, asking Him to speak to you.
