Daily Bible Reading— October 2024, God’s Guiding Word: Justice and Peace预览
October 17
Introduction
Isaiah 5:8–30: Today’s reading includes a series of laments about the ways in which those who are evil behave—some of the different kinds of “sour grapes” from yesterday’s reading (Isaiah 5:1–7). The prophet warns such people of the LORD’s anger and impending punishment. The reading concludes by warning of the threat of invasion from a foreign nation.
Today’s Key Verse: Isaiah 5:16
The LORD Almighty shows his greatness by doing what is right, and he reveals his holiness by judging his people.
Reflect
What evil behaviors are named in today’s reading? What punishment will come for each? Verses 8–10 refer to land in ancient Israel that was assigned to tribes and families, and ownership was passed on within the tribes so every family could work the land and harvest crops. The injustice is that some people were buying land away from the original family owners which especially affected poor landowners. What injustices have you witnessed in society today? In what ways are these injustices being addressed?
Pray
Almighty God, you are righteous in all your ways. Teach me to promote justice and to do what is right in your sight. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Isaiah 11:1–16: Isaiah’s vision of a peaceful kingdom and ideal kingship.
