Jesus, Name Above All Names预览
Son of David
“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (Matthew 1:1)
In the Bible we find several genealogies. These had an important function. Through such a genealogy it could be shown that someone was part of Israel, the people chosen by God. From this people the Savior of the world would be born. The One who would redeem the people of Israel, as well as people from other nations who believed in Him, from the power of sin and death.
It remains an extraordinary miracle: God Himself wanted to become human to restore the relationship with Him. Matthew was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus. He wrote a gospel addressed primarily to the Jews. This gospel begins with Jesus' genealogy. In doing so, Matthew showed his Jewish readers that Jesus was a descendant of David, Israel's most important King. Mary and Joseph were both descendants of David through different lines. Thus, according to his earthly birth, Jesus was a "son of King David". (Luke 1:31-33) God had promised David a descendant who would be King forever. (2 Samuel 7:16; 1 Chronicles 22:10) In the genealogy, Matthew shows that God fulfilled His promise. How does it encourage you to read in the Bible that God always fulfills His promises?
Jesus, King of heaven and earth, thank You for Who You are. Thank You that You are also my King and that I can entrust my life to Your strength and power.
