As we near the end of our journey of looking at the practices Jesus engaged in during His time on earth, we arrive at the practice of confession.

But first, a bit of encouragement: Remember, life is not about mastery. It’s not about perfection. Each of the practices we’ve discussed are a lifelong journey of gifts which enable us to be healed and changed through Christ.

Confession is a function within fellowship, the topic of yesterday’s devo. In confession, we choose to let trusted others in on who we really are.

A quick word of caution when it comes to selecting those ‘trusted others’: it’s so important to find the right people to confide in. You’re looking for someone who is trustworthy, someone who won’t use information against you in a damaging way.

When we confess and let trusted others know our deepest weaknesses and failures, it nourishes our faith in God’s provision to His people. It increases our sense of love and humility before others. And it gives us freedom from the burden of hiding and pretending that we are someone we’re not.

Confession gives us the ability to look the world in the eye. It allows us to be alone at perfect peace and ease. Through confessing we can feel the nearness of our Creator and a relief like no other. Today, confess and be at Home with the heavenly Father.

Today’s invitation:

Consider identifying a “fully disclosing friend,” or someone you can tell everything to. Though this won’t happen overnight, here are some things you can do today to move toward it.

  • Simply begin by asking God to help you in self awareness. Search me, God. Know my heart.
  • Consider if there’s anything you want to tell God about.
  • Then, ask God if there is a person in your life you can develop that kind of trustworthy relationship with.
  • And at the very least, today, choose to tell the truth about things to others. If you’re late, don’t make up a reason why. Just own it.
  • And above all, invite God into your journey of confession. Welcome Home.
