Some of you suffer from “imposter syndrome”—you believe you are not as competent as others perceive you to be. I get it. I frequently look at my life and think, How on earth did I get where I am today? But for those of you who suffer from imposter syndrome, like me, I have a simple and easy suggestion.
If you can’t say what your strengths are, write them down. Go and get your own Post-it notes and a big black Sharpie. Are you a good baker? Are you a good organizer? Are you good with numbers? Whatever it is, write it down now.
There is a story in the Bible where the prophet Habakkuk was instructed to “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets” (Habakkuk 2:2 ESV). I have to assume that’s because sticky note technology hadn’t been invented yet. Either way. Carve your worth into a stone, scrawl it on a tablet, or write it down somewhere. I like to use a Post-it Note, so try that. Take that Post-it Note and stick it to your bathroom mirror.
When you are brushing your teeth, focus on that Post-it Note and pray the right person will see the value you have to offer and put yourself in positions to take advantage of your strengths. After you focus on Post-it Note every day, who knows what could happen? You might get used to identifying with that unique strength that’s all yours. Don’t undersell how valuable you are. Don’t be intimidated by it. Don’t be cocky about it. Just move in it.
There’s nothing than seeing a powerful anointed person dumbing down their strengths. . . . Trust me. You can come from a trailer park or Park Avenue. It doesn’t matter. Don’t put yourself on sale because you are trying to fit in. Take yourself off clearance, baby. See yourself as a masterpiece, and don’t slash the price. You are not less than. You are not last year’s style. People respect people who know who they are and who won’t accept less than they are worth.
Deep down you know who you are.
Start operating from that foundation of knowledge.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gifts You’ve given me. Please help me use them to grow Your kingdom. Amen.
