The Lie of Selfishness

Most humans are selfish. So, it stands to reason that many leaders are selfish. If you’ve been a leader for a while, the temptation is to drift toward your own goals rather than the business or the organization’s goals.

Whether it’s your time or money, you spend it on yourself rather than others. Do your good deeds usually lead to getting recognized? Or are you serving because it’s what another person needs?

In these verses, Paul explained that unselfish leadership involves putting others’ needs before your own. The Apostle also explained that leading like this is having Christ’s mind—given He humbled Himself as a servant to all. Don’t we get this backward most of the time?

There’s a fine line between ambition and “I’ll do everything myself.” The leader who constantly says to himself, “If I want something done right, I’ll have to do it” will ultimately find himself leading no one. Leadership can often feel lonely, but you cannot do it alone.

Lord, help me to resist selfishness by seeking to serve without looking for anything in return. Help me to spend less time calculating the ROI of every action and instead, check my thoughts, feelings, and actions by whether they are of value to You.
