Building a Strong Family Rooted in God's Word预览
Raising Courageous Kids
It would appear no previous generation has had so many resources and opportunities as kids do today.
Yet it also looks as if no previous generation has had so much fear.
The paradox seems strange. Perhaps they have more to lose, so it makes them more fearful? Or maybe we have imposed our fears on them, not trusting they can handle what’s coming?
We see the destructive effects of anxiety and stress on this generation and want them to know that, whatever the factors, living in fear isn’t the answer. We also can predict the many problems they will encounter that will require them to be courageous warriors to overcome.
So how do we raise those brave fighters? How do we raise courageous kids who will trust God over their fears? The basic training can start with a declaration of who God is. So often, when the giant problems of our day appear crushingly insurmountable, we become fearful because we forget to bring God into the picture. To combat this, we can remind ourselves and our children of what God’s Word says about God, helping them envision a God of unlimited resources, power, and love and see past the fire-breathing dragon in front of them.
Don't be afraid. I am with you.
Don't tremble with fear.
I am your God.
I will make you strong,
as I protect you with my arm
and give you victories.
Isaiah 41:10 (CEV)
Over and over in the Bible when people are cornered and afraid, the Lord responds by reminding them of who he is and what he’s capable of.
Building a child’s confidence in himself/herself has its place but cannot help them overcome all the challenges life can throw their way. But building their confidence in a powerful God whom they can know intimately brings lasting strength and courage.
So remind your family of who God is. If your kids are little, play a game of “My God is so big, he can _________.” (Take turns filling in the blank.) Memorize verses that tell of God’s strength. Share stories from your life and the Bible of how God saved you. Help your teens focus on God’s ability instead of their problems, with expressions such as, “Yeah, I know recent news reports may make you feel unsafe, but don't be afraid. God will protect you.”
When kids start to grasp who God is and what he does, their courage will grow.
PRAY
God who creates stars, makes mountains tremble, stops storms with a word, we will trust you. Our problems appear big, but you are so much bigger, and your love for us doesn’t end. Thank you for bringing us through. Amen.
