Week 1: Incarnation

The Mystery of Godliness

I’m a mystery fan. I don't like the dark, mutilated kind of mysteries that seem to be rampant these days. Instead, I like a good mystery with a strong plot and a surprising ending. The kind that you didn’t ever see coming, but as you think back, there were little clues all along the way. In today’s reading, Paul says that the “mystery of godliness is great.” What is this great mystery that Paul wants to share? You’ll have to read it for yourself today.

I will point out that the following six lines Paul shares about this mystery appear to be an early Christian hymn or creed concerning the Gospel. The mystery he reveals shouldn’t surprise us as clues have been built in all along. In the dawn of creation, in every covenant, in every prophetic voice, in the wisdom of the proverbs and the lyrics of the Psalms, there was the good news of Jesus.

If you want to memorize a passage from this series, I will encourage it to be this one.

Read this text slowly and multiple times today. Let it seep through your mind, fill up your heart and overflow through your character as you are being Gospel formed.
