Inseverable

You have granted me life and steadfast love, and your care has preserved my spirit. (v. 12)

If anyone ever had anything to complain to God about, Job did. His livestock, servants, ten children—stolen or killed in one day. Soon after, he was struck with loathsome sores from head to toe. All that was left to him was his wife, who told him to curse God and die! And all because God told Satan that Job would remain faithful to him no matter what Satan did.

Have you ever felt like you were sitting in the ash heap of your disintegrated life? Even when well-meaning friends come to comfort, we’re sometimes left thinking that somehow this horrible situation is our fault or that God must be against us. Job didn’t understand why all these tragedies had beset him—and he complained openly and bitterly to God. But Job also held firmly to his belief that God still loved him with an inseverable love: “You have granted me life and steadfast love, and your care has preserved my spirit.” Nothing could separate Job from God’s steadfast love.

And God honored Job’s belief that, because of God’s steadfast love for him, his spirit would be preserved. God wasn’t against Job, and he’s not against us. He wants us to come to him in our most dire circumstances weeping and pouring out our hearts to him. As Christians, we can trust that God’s love is inseverable and will preserve our spirit through anything we experience in this life on earth.

As you pray, remember that God’s steadfast love is inseverable.
