God Is Truth, So I Am Free

Truth is more than facts and data. Truth is what is real. It is what works, what matters, what stands the test of time.

The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about this topic. Words like wisdom, understanding, knowledge, insight, and discernment appear hundreds of times. The central theme of the book is the importance of growing in our knowledge of truth and our ability to apply it.

In the New Testament, Paul told the Colossians, “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God” (1:9–10).

Notice how Paul desired that they would both know the truth and grow into the truth. The point of truth is not to know more, but to live better in obedience to God. It is to accomplish more, to make fewer mistakes, to work more effectively, to love people more. Error wastes our time and energy, but truth gives us freedom. It enables us to live in a sustainable, healthy, holy way.

That’s why Paul told the Corinthian church, “We know that ‘We all possess knowledge.’ But knowledge puffs up while love builds up” (1 Cor. 8:1). He was reminding them that the point of knowledge is to become better human beings, not walking encyclopedias.

Truth is always practical. And truth always leads to freedom.

Finding truth is a lifelong pursuit. That means opening your heart and mind to God in prayer. It means studying the Bible and increasing in your knowledge of Scripture. It means paying attention in life and growing from both failure and success. It means honoring those who’ve gone before you. And it means pursuing education, learning, and wisdom.

What areas of your life need truth today? God is the source of that truth, and he wants to share it with you.

Think about the concepts of truth and freedom. What do those ideas mean? How have they changed you? Looking toward the future, in what topics or areas would you like to grow in wisdom and understanding?
