Fight for your city

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand” (Ephesians 6:12-13).

All Christians are called to fight for their city and their nation. Not necessarily with weapons (although sadly enough, this may be necessary sometimes), but with faith and prayer. This world is involved in a tremendous spiritual battle. The book of Daniel shows us something about what is going on. In chapter 10, Daniel sees a terrifying vision of a man who presents himself as a spiritual warrior on behalf of the people of Israel. He tells about his battle against “the prince of the kingdom of Persia” and “the prince of Greece.” These are not earthly royals but evil angels/demons.

Daniel’s vision was special and terrifying. Most of the time, we don’t see what is going on in the spiritual realm. But we need to be aware of this battle, for we are also involved! As the warrior tells Daniel, “From the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard” (Daniel 10:12). Our prayers matter!

In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he calls Christians to put on the whole armor of God so that they may be able to withstand their enemies, which are the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
