JESUS’ PEACE, PILATE’S PAIN

Written by John Hyde, Executive Director, YMCA Camp Sea Gull, North Carolina

Walking the narrow streets of Jerusalem along the Via Dolorosa, I reflected on my experiences with the Stations of the Cross in my home church, absorbing the story of Jesus’ path to the cross as it unfolded in each of the stained glass windows.

Now, fully immersed in the sights and sounds of the Holy City, people and vehicles clanking across cobblestones, and shopkeepers going about their day, I experienced Jesus’ suffering in a new light with my YMCA friends.

We stood at the first station, reading the Gospel story of Jesus being condemned, envisioning the crowd insisting to Pilate that Jesus was causing a stir across Judea with his teaching.

Imagine being Pilate, faced with an arduous decision and under the scrutiny of a violent majority, their thunderous shouts demanding Jesus be crucified.

Who was under examination and judgment in this story – Pilate or Jesus?

One was bound by allegiance to Caesar. The other embodied the love of God. One wrestled with Jesus’ identity and truth. The other humbly endured injustice and offered forgiveness.

Pilate’s reluctance to immediately convict demonstrates the impact of Jesus’ presence on our lives and the lives of others.

Pilate shows us what it looks like to consider our trials through the lens of faith, to live and love like Jesus; ultimately, though, Pilate conceded to the boisterous cries of the crowd.

As leaders, we strive for the alignment of inward values and outward behavior; that who we think we are or say we are is reflected in our actions.

How do we respond when unfairly blamed or criticized?

In what way do we unfairly blame or criticize?

In light of those we lead, how can we exude the humility and quiet confidence modeled by Jesus and stand firm in the face of immense pressure?

Whether it’s within your church or YMCA, your organization or community, let us follow the example of Jesus, especially in the most difficult of circumstances, creating an environment where those we lead and serve may feel compelled to do the same.

May you be mindful of the loud voices but attentive to the quiet one, may you hear the peace-filled words of Jesus and trust him, affirmed by his sacrificial love that is present with us always.
