Identity

Body:

Who do you think you are? No, really, I’m asking. How would you answer that question? Are you an athlete? Are you a student? Do you even know?

We’re all told that we need to “find ourselves”—to discover who we are and live it loud and proud, right?  But how are we supposed to know the answer to such a profound question? Or worse, what happens when we think we have it figured out only to have it stripped from us? Any athlete who has ever been injured will wrestle with this question.

Thankfully, as children of God, we don’t have to figure out our identity on our own. We can circumvent this whole struggle by going straight to the absolute Truth: God’s Word.

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “find your identity in Christ.” What does that mean?  Take a look at Psalm 139:1-6. This verse gives us a tiny glimpse into how well God knows us. He knows when we sit, when we move, when we sleep. He knows every thought and every word. How? Because He created us. Who knows a creation better than the one who made it?

What does this mean for us? That while we might not be able to know ourselves, God does. He is not shy about telling us who we are. Hundreds of verses throughout Scripture tell us bits and pieces of truth like we are God’s masterpieces created with specific purposes (Eph. 2:10); we are God’s friends (John 15:15); we are free from the power of sin and death (Romans 8:1-2); we’re complete when we have Jesus (Col. 2:10); and we are super loved by Him (1 John 3:1).

Together, all of these verses tell us our TRUE identity—the one that won’t change the way our earth-based identities will. This is the “true you” as laid out by the one who made you.

Question:

  1. How does your personal definition of yourself compare to God’s?
  2. Who are you according to Scripture?
