Don’t Forget To Remember

Why is it so easy to forget what we should remember and remember what we should forget? We see this often in our lives and in the Bible.

In the book of Exodus, there’s a story of how God brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and took them on a  journey to the Promised land. Yet, time and time again, we read that the Israelites would constantly complain of small things and resent God for bringing them on this journey. They complained because they forgot two things: how bad their lives were in slavery and how God had performed miracles to save them and lead them to a better place.

Then Mark 8:14-16 tells us the story of when the disciples forgot Jesus’ power and miracles. While they were on a boat to Bethsaida, the disciples complained of not having enough bread to eat on their journey. Jesus immediately asked, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread?... do you not remember?”

Here is what the disciples forgot: Right before they got on that boat, Jesus had fed a crowd of 4,000 people with only 7 loaves of bread. And two chapters before this (Mark 6) Jesus fed 5,000 people with a meager 5 loaves and 2 fish. He performed an absolute miracle of feeding people, twice.

Before we shake our finger at the Israelites and the disciples, isn’t that just like us to forget the miracles Jesus has done for us in our own lives?

Today, let’s magnify God by remembering all that He has done: how He stepped into our mess, our dysfunction, our pain, and brought us out in victory. As we remember the miracles He has done for us, we’ll become more certain that nothing is too big for our God in our current circumstance. Let’s choose today to remember what we should remember, and forget what we should forget. He is faithful and He WILL COME THROUGH. If He has done it before, He will do it again!

PRAYER

Jesus,

I come to You and I choose to remember all that You have done. You are faithful, even when I am not! You always come through, and You have proven Yourself over and over again. Today, I remember all that You have done for me and how faithful You have been. I know if You have done it before, You will do it again! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
