Your Sacred Story Matters (and How to Begin Writing It)

Your story matters because we have been charged to remember all that God has done.

One winter in Alaska I was lost in a snowstorm. I was alone in a tiny boat on a big sea. Then, if that wasn’t enough, my engine broke down. I was drifting into crashing waves against a cliff. Nor was there any beach in sight where I could land. I was at the end of all my resources. In desperation, I shouted out to God, “God, where do I go? Help me!” A moment later the snow stopped, the clouds lifted and I could see a tiny beach a half mile away. I had oars, so I was able to row across to it. I built a fire to keep warm and to scare away the bears while I waited for rescue. I was on that beach all day until nightfall when a plane, still searching for me, saw my fire. God showed up miraculously throughout that day in several ways. I wrote about it, every detail, knowing I would forget if I didn’t. And I wanted my children to know what had happened.

When God spectacularly delivered the Israelites from slavery, he charged them to never forget his rescues. “Be careful and watch yourselves closely so that you don’t forget.” But remembering was not just for them: it was for their children as well. “Teach them to your children and grandchildren.” But sadly, they weren’t careful. Through most of Israel’s history, they “forgot” God and fell into a disastrous cycle of sin, rebellion, then judgement from God.

God’s charge to “remember,” is for us as well. God is writing a beautiful dramatic story through our lives. He desires that his name, his power and his unrelenting love be made known—to us, and then to many others.

I’m certain you’ve experienced many deliverances in your own life. How will the next generation know what God has done for you unless you write it down and pass it on?

Writing Prompt: Create a timeline of significant events in your life of faith. If that feels overwhelming, consider one or two topical timelines. For example: A timeline of God’s Rescues. Or, a Timeline of Faith-Stretching Events or a Timeline of Encounters with God. Choose one event from that timeline that is begging to be written and told!

PRAYER: Lord, don’t let me forget who you are and all you’ve done in my life. Please bring to my remembrance the special ways you’ve shown me your power, your mercy, your love. Give me the words to communicate these stories to others, that they might know you too. For your honor and glory, Amen.
