Habit of Hope: Praying for the Marketplace预览
Pray for Church, Christian Service, Nonprofit
The Greek word ‘ekklesia’ is most commonly translated “church” in the New Testament. It means, “the called-out ones.” This word was part of the common vernacular. Every village and town across Judea had an ekklesia, a gathering of wise leaders, brought together by their common vision for the well-being of their community. It is safe to conclude that the original understanding for church (ekklesia) is to be a community within the community that adds value, brings wisdom, and fosters wholeness.
Christ saved us not just from something, but also to something. God longed to restore His image in His people to free them to pursue His original dreams for the world. Here, now, today, tomorrow. Redemption is the start to a new story—a new life to be lived. God sent the Holy Spirit to birth a people created by the gospel of Jesus to continue His story. God created the Church -- the second body of Christ -- on earth comprised of those who trust in Jesus and follow his ways, to be a sign of the future of all of creation.
God’s redemptive work is not the end of our stories; redemption is the beginning of our participation in God’s work of restoration in lives and renewal of the world. Paul put it this way: His intent was that “through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.” As the Church, we get to participate with God in His renewal project.
The Church is expressed in neighborhood parishes and megachurches, non-profits, parachurch ministries and service organizations. Together we are what Peter proclaims, “you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” We often gather together as the Church to pray, but today let’s unite our hearts in prayer for the Church.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we pray for every expression of your Church and lift their leaders up to you. May your Holy Spirit give them wisdom and inspiration. May they find rest in your provision. Bless their efforts as they serve the world in Your name. May they bring healing and hope to all they come in contact with. In Jesus name.
