“Love in Action”

Are you able to show compassion for someone who is in trouble? Compassion is love in action. That is, loving the Lord with all our heart, soul, strength and mind leads to loving our neighbor by serving him with compassion.

Jesus showed compassion for the distressed on a number of occasions. He taught those who were like sheep without a shepherd. He fed a hungry crowd. In both instances, he was upfront: “I have compassion on these people.” He showed His compassion for Lazarus’ family when He wept at the graveside.

Jesus taught us to apply compassion rather than condemnation when He chose not to condemn the woman who was caught in adultery. We (and others) may feel that we are condoning sin when we show compassion to one who has sinned. But Jesus covered that base; He told the woman to “sin no more.” How can we use Jesus’ words to answer those who tell us not to cast the first stone when we point to sin in the distressed person’s life?
