The Reward of Obedience

By Al Pearson

Growing up, I heard many stories about Abraham, his travels, the victory of rescuing his nephew, and his submission to the word of God regarding his son Isaac. I even sang a song written about Abraham and his “many sons.” However, rarely did I hear about the sacrifice Abraham made to follow an unfamiliar God to be obedient.

Imagine for a moment this guy who is a heathen hears the voice of God telling him to leave his country, his relatives, and his own family to go to a foreign land he knew nothing about? This is a picture of “blind obedience” that I know all too well.

Back in 2004, there was a business opportunity that compelled me to leave everything I’d known for 30 years and move to a place I’d never even visited. The thought of my wife leaving her close-knit family as well as me leaving the only place I’d developed deep roots was difficult and scary. The sacrifice was going to be great for my wife, our twins, and me. However, we trusted God and chose to follow His leading.

In hindsight, we can see that God was preparing us for something much bigger than we would have experienced had we resisted His voice prompting us to move.

Too often our flesh is tempted to enjoy the comfort of the familiar and the ease of the known; however, obedience requires sacrifice. Obedience is not just about you, nor is its reward just for you. Sacrificial obedience also provides a blessing for those walking with you and after you. Abraham’s obedience led to becoming the father of many nations, which led to the greatest reward—the birth of Jesus. And through Jesus’ obedience, we are now called the “children of God” (Romans 8:14–15).

Maybe today God is reminding you of a step you need to take or a change you need to make. Are you willing to sacrifice the cost of comfort for the reward of obedience?

Remember, “God causes everything to work together for the good to those who love God...” (Romans 8:28) even though at times it may not feel good. Just trust that the reward of obedience is always worth it!

Prayer

Lord, today I choose to obey You. I know You have a plan for me, and though it may not look like my plan, I believe Your plan is best. Lead me today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Memory Verse

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14–16
