LETTERS OF JOHN

AUTHOR:

The apostle John wrote all three of these letters at the end of his 30-year residence in Ephesus.

DATE:
These three letters were written before his death in AD 98 and after he wrote his Gospel, making it around AD 90-95.

FIRST LETTER

AUDIENCE:

John's first letter was written to the churches in Asia Minor, surrounding where he lived in Ephesus. He had an amazing relationship with all of the churches after being there for 30 years, and they were all in true fellowship with one another.

REASON:
John wrote this first letter to focus even more on fellowship within their communities, to teach them more about sin, to confirm their salvation and to discredit any false teaching that was infiltrating the area.

THEME:

Security in eternal life.

"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life." (5:13 ESV)
