God’s Sure Provision

In the Northern Kingdom of Israel, the prophet Elijah asked a widow to provide for him. The widow told him she had only a little flour and cooking oil left. She was going to use these meager supplies to prepare one final meal for her and her son.

Without hesitation, Elijah responded that God would provide for the woman and her son if she made food for him first. The woman did what Elijah said and her containers never ran out of flour and oil. God provided.

God knows every need we have. These needs can cause us great anxiety, frustration, and pain when we don’t know how they will be met. Knowing this, Jesus said, “I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear” (Matthew 6:25).

But how can you not worry when the problem is staring you in your face? How can your heart not be filled with anxiety when you have more bills than money? How can you have peace when you hear your child’s stomach growling and your bank account is in the negative?

Friend, you can have faith in God’s provision because you are precious to him. If God sent his only son to die for you, then you can trust that he will also provide for you. Jesus reminded us of God’s goodness and love when he said, “If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him” (Matthew 7:11).

God will provide for you because he loves you. He sees you and he is for you. Even when systems plot against you, God is fighting for you.

Lord, help me trust that you will provide for me in your timing. Give me a fresh outlook to see how you are working things together for my good and your glory.
