A SAVIOR: CHRIST THE LORD

In Luke chapter 2, that famous Christmas passage, God finally reveals Himself to us in flesh through this little babe. That baby Jesus is God incarnate and has come to reveal Himself as our Savior.

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10–11).

“Fear not!” This phrase was not only for those fearful shepherds, but it reached all of humanity. A Savior has finally come, and mankind no longer needs to fear.

Jesus came to take away the anxiety of our sinful hearts through His gift of redemption. Our hopes and fears are met in Him as this Christmas carol, penned by Phillips Brooks in 1867, says:

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight.

The angels were bringing “good tidings of great joy.” The good news? We have a Savior. There is now great joy for mankind because this Savior has taken care of the penalty for our sins, and we are now reconciled to God through Him. Instead of fearing God’s wrath, we now bow in reverence to His holiness.

“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:3–5).

This is the true reason for celebration: “unto you is born this day . . . a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”

No wonder the angels gloriously sang, and we join in, “Glory to God in the highest!”

Kids’ Corner

Put on a play about Chapter 2 in Luke. Read the chapter aloud while others play the parts. Let the kids dress up as Joseph and Mary, the shepherds, angels, and sheep. Give each child a short line to recite. Film the play and send it to those far away or who need cheering up this season.
